This book, and all of Jean Genet's writing, is unique - 'Gutter poetry'. Genet can somehow make some of his favourite words such as 'shit' and 'prick' sound poetic.
The Thief's Journal in particular tells a semi-autobiographic tale of Genet's life as a thief. His style makes it difficult at times to know when he is being serious or joking, when he is using symbolism or realism.
I don't think you will ever read anything like Jean Genet and this is the best of all his novels if you want to get started with his work. Close second being Miracle of the Rose and third; Our Lady of the Flowers.

Jean Genet의 소설은 파리에서 사르트르의 소설을 읽을때 함께 읽었어야했는데;;; 못읽은게 참 후회된다..
사르트르나 까뮈, Chuck Palahniuk,헨리 밀러, 나보코프 등을 좋아하는 이라면 강추.. 뽕네프의 연인들이나 그렉 아라키의 영화들을 보고서도 거부감이 심하지 않은이들에게 추천한다..

마치 잘 익은 와인의 향과 빛깔에 흠뻑 빠져들게하는 보들레르나 랭보의 퇴폐적 탐미주의..
그리고 그 와인이 목구멍으로 가볍게 넘어가길 거부하는 듯 드라이한 탄닌의 저항감처럼 강인하고 확고한 그의 철학
그리고 마치 존 말코비치의 눈으로 세상을 바라보며 그의 느낌을 전해 받듯이 험버트 험버트에 버금가는 설득력으로 지극히 평범한 중산층의 소시민인 나를 주네의 눈과 손으로 그가 바라보는 세상 그리고 그가 소외된 버림받은 세상을 느끼게 해준다. 간밤에 그가 남기고간 취기가 아직 덜 가신 아침 햇살 속에서 숙취로 괴로워하둣 또 그의 글을 찾게 된다.. 하지만 helas!!! 그의 영어판 킨들버젼은 정말 비추다!! 오타 작렬!!! 별로 길지도 않은 이 책에서 오타를 도대체 얼마나 흩뿌려놓고 이런 버젼을 돈받고 팔 생각을 했냐!!

Ugh. From the very first page to the end I had a hard time reading this. Some parts were beautifully written and some dialogues interesting but I had a hard time with the monologue/rambling whole. I kept forgetting who was who and I could have fallen for Genet’s lyricism but I just didn’t.
