This was Cecile Pin’s debut novel, and it was definitely impressive. She wrote very passionately and about a heavy topic nonetheless.
Wandering Souls is about a family of three young Vietnamese children, Anh, Thanh, and Minh. These children set off to Hong Kong for refugee with the plans of the rest of their family meeting them shortly after. However after finding out that the rest of their family died along their journey, the three children are left orphans. Anh, being the oldest of the three becomes responsible for keeping them fed and taken care of. We follow this families journey through poverty, grief, loss and eventual growth.
This was an overall emotional novel. The one thing that I wasn’t a fan of, which I usually am, was the alternating POVs in this novel. I felt like they were hard to follow and I didn’t fully grasp the purpose of them until later in the novel so it made it more difficult of a read for me.

I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy this when I first started it but as I kept going it just got more and more beautiful. The way it all wraps up I found particularly moving. Really glad I stuck it out with this one!
