Holly Gibney of Finders Keepers is hired by Penny Dahl to look for her missing daughter, Bonnie. As Holly investigates, she finds more missing people and tries to figure out if it’s related to Bonnie’s disappearance or not. We read from Holly’s POV, but we also follow what is happening to these missing people. I really enjoyed being back with all these characters - Holly, Jerome, Barbara, and Pete (although a small role). I thought I would hate another book where COVID plays a role, but it was fine. However, I think COVID could have been left out too. All in all another enjoyable read from Stephen King.

I actually really enjoyed this. I've not read King for a while, though his work is always an auto-buy. This was a pleasant surprise, and while I wasn't sure about Holly Gibney, this has reinforced my like for her, although I wasn't overly aware that I actually liked her in the first place! Very pleasantly surprised.

This is the King I know and love. We get to check back in with Holly, the private investigator who has appeared or been featured in five prior stories, as she is hired to find a woman's missing daughter.

Learning who the killers are at the outset and understanding their motive relatively early on is enjoyable. Additionally, reading the story through different points of view creates an immersive experience. At one point, we are feeling dehydrated while locked in a cell without anything to quench our thirst. In another chapter, we are capturing colleagues and acquaintances in an attempt to keep debilitating discomfort from sciatica at bay.

One thing that really impressed me is that the killers, while participating in grossly heinous acts, had touching interactions that clearly indicated that the love between them ran deep - a reminder that monsters are real and are often not who you may suspect.

As the book takes place in 2020, Covid appears as an integral part of the backdrop. Anti-vaxxers and Covid-deniers may find it preachy, but I think it properly portrays human interactions in America during that time.

I didn't want it to end. 4.5
