Holly: a novel

“She likes to think (but doesn’t quite believe) there’s a kind of providence at work in matters of right and wrong, blind but powerful, like that statue of Lady Justice holding out her scales. That there’s a force in the affairs of men and women standing on the side of the weak and unsuspecting, and against evil.” I think that’s almost a perfect summation of King’s worldview. In the end, to misquote Dark Helmet, “good beats evil. Because evil is dumb

I was confused by this book and this overall collection of Holley Gibney works. If we can call it that ...
The Outsider was good. If It Bleeds was random, but also good.
This one is kind of random too.

I actually enjoy reading stories that recap the covid era. I get it's probably traumatizing for many but that was a VERY divisive and extraordinary time, it is hard to ignore and it birthed a lot of wild shit. I appreciated the author's note as well.

My issue is that this book felt very drawn out. I kept zoning out with the bouncing between the characters and timelines. I also expected more supernatural aspects, similar to The Outsiders.

But thank goodness for Penny and Barbara. Loved the last 15 or so percent of the book.

The start is a bit slow but it becomes really tense and attention grabbing towards the middle up until the satisfying end. Holly’s inner monologue was a dreary at times to read through but it developed her character. The repetition of certain scenes in almost every chapter, such as Holly smoking a cigarette, got very monotonous, as well as the side story of Holly’s mother, which ultimately did not add anything valuable to the plot but was explored for a painstakingly large amount of the book

This was a surprisingly quick read for a longer book. Holly is a detective searching for a missing woman. As the story goes, you find a story of depravity and gruesome acts. This story is not for someone with a weak stomach. It is relatively gruesome in some parts.

It is my first Stephen King novel and really worth the read. He has a great writing style that keeps you engrossed in the book. I loved the conclusion and look forward to reading more Stephen King novels.

This book is not what I was expecting from Stephen King. His author's note at the end tried to explain to use of COVID as a central theme, but it just wasn't it. And the choices in dialogue for the antagonists were....choices I would not have made. Those things along took away from the overall plot more than anything else
