Struggled to finish this one. I hated living through COVID the first time, so listening to this covid heavy story sucked. I didn’t like the main character, but the story line was good.

I just love that King can make cannibal senior citizens scarier than shape shifting monsters!
I know that some people don't like this book due to how political it was about the Covid crisis. King makes no secret of the fact he's a raging liberal who hates Trump with the heat of a thousand fiery suns. Which I don't mind, considering I'm a raging socialist who hates Trump with the heat of a thousand fiery suns.
But even some people who agree with King's liberal views, because they want their fiction to be escapists and real-world issues not to be brought in. I guess there are two camps in fiction. One who wants their fiction for escapism from the harshness of real life and those who love being challenged to think about social, economic, and political issues in their fiction.
Personally, I am a bit of both. I do enjoy a romantasy for some escape, but I also want to be challenged to think of the world in a new light. So, I am on King's side with this. We need a strong call out for anti-vaxxers and Trump supporters and the extreme harm they are doing to the USA and the rest of the world.
In this book, we really get a good look at Holly and who she was as a character as she takes the spotlight. If It Bleeds did give Holly the spotlight, but it was just a novella. Here we really see what makes her tic and who she is a person. And also, what made her the way she is. Holly is actually a character that I relate too scarily well, which is very rare for me to relate to a character in any sort of fiction.
The villains are just so hateable in this. And it's amazing how much I hated them more than the Outsiders. In a way, it's because the Outsiders were kind of fascinating, but the Harris' are just pure deranged evil. The plot is good, as we cut from the rest of the characters to the villains, and the progress on the case really progresses at a good pace.
I really liked how Holly's insecurities were handled here. And as someone very similar to Holly, I just love how realistic she is as a character. She doesn't get over all her flaws and issues, but she is working on it. In many ways, our flaws never go away. We just have to get better at handling them.
Great work, and an awesome character study on the battle between good and evil.

This is only maybe my third Stephen King novel that I have read, but I really need to read more of his work!
We follow Holly Gibney who is a Private Detective who gets contacted by Penny Dahl who is looking for her missing daughter.
Reluctantly, Holly accepts the case because Penny’s desperation to find her daughter made it harder to turn down.
Around the area where Bonnie went missing, lives an elderly couple Emily and Rodney Harris. They seem innocent on the outside, but the horrifying things happens in their home, holy moly.
Holly discovers that Bonnie wasn’t the first person to go missing in that area and there are about 4 others and wow! Holly has a great team behind her and although this story is mostly the case, we get little insights about some of the other characters like Jerome and Barbara.
The only reason I didn’t rate this book a full five stars is because of the political views in the book. Besides that, I truly can’t wait to read more of King’s books and I can’t wait to read the rest of the books that feature Holly.
