Another great book by Stephen King, I really enjoy his writing style. This story is filled with both heartwarming and heartbreaking moments - much like life itself.

Well. I may be able to keep a straight face reading skut on the bus, but I could not hold in my reactions to some of the scenes in this book. My advice: dont eat while reading.

This felt like classic SK horror / thriller with some bold statements about COVID, vaccines, presidents, and police brutality. Glad to see that SK is not delusional even if he must be a bit crazy to write this stuff! 😜

“Wake up, Genius”

So disappointed. I love the character of Holly Gibney and I am a big fan of Stephen King’s books. Buried in here somewhere is a pretty good and scary story. But instead of a story with King’s political leanings and lecturing thrown in like usual….we have King’s political views taking center stage at the expense of the story line and character developemnt. The story itself dragged somewhat as we waited for Holly to catch up to what we already knew. Where usually the characters feel so real, in this one they are mere ventriloquist dummies. Even when he addresses this in the Author’s Note, he basically says you probably are an anti-vaxxer if you find it too preachy. The book and even Holly come across as sanctimonious, preachy and judgy (and I am NOT an anti vaxxer or Trump supporter)…not what I look forward to reading. All I can say is thank goodness for Jerome and Barbara! It felt to me like King was just trying to pump out something about Trump and Covid and he wanted a beloved character to be his spokesmodel. So he made up a quick story to do it. I was really expecting him to do better by Holly.

I alternated listening and reading to Holly as well. I was looking forward to the female narrator Justine Lupe, especially since this was a Holly book and not a Bill Hodges book it made sense that he did not use the fantastic Will Patton. And Lupe played Holly on the the TV version of Mr Mercedes, how could it miss? Well every time one of the older characters (male or female)was speaking it sounded like some version of Elmira Gulch or the Wicked Witch of the West to me. Instead of being scared I was mostly laughing at how poorly they were being acted. Lupe did a decent job with Holly but I am sad to say that I felt like Will Patton captured her character much better.

It miight take me awhile to spend my own money on future King books. I won’t give up but will definitely wait on a Library versions the next time. I’ll try not to turn into Morris Bellamy here, and rather just hope SK comes to his senses in the next installment.

The book wasn’t terrible but it started off strong then the coast down the hill wasn’t very consistent. I felt it dragged a bit in the middle and so I got to a point where I just had to find a place where anything else was happening. Other than that, pretty typical Holly Gibney story.
