Beth is in her thirties and lives with her parents. She’s always quit every job, and never had any responsibilities, until she unexpectedly becomes the guardian of her sister’s children.
I loved this, it was lovely to share Beth’s journey, and as a parent so much of it resonated - those feelings of not being convinced you’re up to the job, but having to carry on regardless.

This was both heartbreaking and laugh out loud funny - the dialogue was just spot on and I loved that the main character gets to say what many mums are thinking without sounding like she doesn’t love her children!
I did find that I was struggling to want to pick this up though - perhaps that was me more than the book - but it didn’t grip me and felt like the ending was obvious from the outset which kind of made reading it feel like I knew where I was heading the whole time.

Loved the book, couldn't put it down. I'm just a bit disappointed that we don't know whether the sister comes out of the coma
At 30 years old, Beth Lander is a serial quitter (jobs and relationships) who still lives with her parents and has never been responsible for anyone other than herself before. When a sudden tragedy thrusts her into the guardianship of a teenage niece and toddler nephew, she finds herself very out of her depth. Thankfully, with help from her parents, her (platonic) best friend, Jory, and an octogenarian neighbour, Beth decides it’s time to finally step up.
This isn’t really a romance novel, but I was very interested in the story premise. Written in first person from the perspective of Beth, we are taken on a rollercoaster of a journey when a family tragedy turns her life upside down. I was quite invested in the character growth of Beth; for someone whose only commitment is weekly drinks at a pub, having to step up to take care of an angsty teenager and a toddler is no mean feat.
As mentioned, there is little romance in this story, but I loved the determination, bravery, and perseverance shown by Beth as she tries her very best to care for her sister’s children under heartbreaking circumstances. Even though she fumbled and made mistakes, she never gave up being the aunt they needed.
This was a very heartwarming and uplifting read that speaks a lot about finding an inner strength you never knew you had in times of darkness and need. 4.5/5 ⭐️
“But there is a richness of life and friendship and hope being built around the edges of all that grief and worry. Without a shadow of a doubt it has been the worst year of my life but it has also changed my life and not all of it has been bleak.”

Just beautiful! This book made me feel all the feels. Sarah Turner delivered the goods with her foray into fiction. She draws from her own experiences of parenting and lends her unique sense of humour and honesty to this story. I cried, I laughed, I cringed, I laughed and cried some more. I couldn’t put it down.

Women’s fiction with a big strong heart
I was immediately drawn into this family pulling together in times of crisis after young parents are injured and killed in a road traffic accident leaving the previously happily going free single sister looking after a teenager abs a toddler with the help and sometimes hindrance of their grandparents
Luckily for most of us parenthood develops slowly as we learn as the child grows what we need to do to keep them warm fed clean healthy and happy .How traumatic it must be if this is suddenly thrust upon us by fate .
I loved the story of how Beth the younger sister puts on her big girl pants and takes over the care of the 2 children and their very differing needs
I loved the on off relationship she has with her old school friend and was urging them to get together very soon into the book
The addition of an elderly male neighbour adds an extra input to the story I rather liked him and his joy when a parcel delivery man takes a picture of his slippers
I don’t usually read what I suppose would be classified as chick lit but this book had me grabbed ,I blubbed giggled and was sad when I’d finished
I’d like another novel to see what happens to the family as I’m now invested in their outcome

I haven’t read/ listened to a book like this for so long! I found myself in need of a pallete cleanser, something a bit more uplifting. And I couldn’t have chosen better!
This was a beautifully written book, whilst dealing with sensitive topics.
The characters were well thought out and wholly relatable.
What the author has done here is show that everything can change in an instant. One decision, one action, can alter everything. When it matters, you find out who’s most important around you, who will be there, and friendships can be found in the most unlikeliest of places.
And above all, there’s hope. Hope for change, hope for the future.
