I loved it, so incredible. plot twists and resolutions were *Chefs kiss* not basic or predictable...
I do wish he hadn't slightly over-exaggerated her menstrual cycle and such, I know it is complicated but he played it very unrealistic to me
WHY DIDNT HE DEVELOP THE RELATIONSHIP WITH GEM MOOOORE!!! I needed them to have SOME sort of satisfying romantic twist at the end, I feel like Riordan missed out on that part *sigh*

The representation in this book was quite good. I especially liked that Ana's periods and cramps were expressed in her narration without making a big deal about it; it really shows that it's a normal part of life. However, towards the end something was mentioned about blue eyes and if Riordan meant that Ana or her family had blue eyes I would be disappointed because it feels awkward to have the south asian main character have blue eyes; as if it's being used to make their appearance more 'interesting' than brown hair and brown eyes. As I'm not sure about this, I haven't let it affect my rating.

The plot was interesting and easy to follow despite the fact that I haven't read or watched 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Some things felt unrealistic, but i'll let it slide because it is a middle grade book. Something I can't negotiate is the writing. At times it felt very monotone, as if I was being told what was happening rather than being shown (see: the 'show don't tell' rule), and the dialogue sometimes felt awkward – do people really talk like that? It was very different to the more natural narration in Percy Jackson and other books by Riordan, which was unfortunate. Still, the action scenes were well written and Ana's perspective was well written.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book! Bear in mind that it deals with grief and death so I would recommend it for readers 13+.

I had a really hard time getting into this. Honestly the last 80 pages were nice but the rest of the book was so boring and so bland and even the gasp in shock factor moments didn’t capture me enough to keep reading like I would read the gasp moment then set the book down because I simply did not care. This book did not feel like a Rick book to me and it was a bit sad but I didn’t wanna DNF it I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt. But I’ve finished it now annnnnd that’s that.
