- I liked the characters. Ana was a good main character. I liked that she reacted to things like a normal person. I also liked that she didn't make silly decisions, even though she had no idea what she was doing half the time. I also loved her relationship with her friends.
- I really liked Nelinha. You know I love a character with an extensive wardrobe (Hi Merlin đź‘‹). Gem was cool. I liked him. Ester was cute. I liked how caring she was towards everyone and everything. She also has a cute dog so...
- The plot was interesting, though it did lull in the middle. There was a big plot twist that I enjoyed.
- I wasn't really engaged until about 25%. I think it was because so much happened at the beginning that I didn't have time to adjust the book's world.
- I thought they used besties/babe a bit too much, but it got better later on.

It was an awesome reading experience. I feel like if you're in the mood for mystery and adventure with some lighthearted scenes in between and a realistic way that people talk to each other (as in, not stale, forced dialogue like some other sci-fi books I've read) this is a great pick. It's for children of ages 8 and above, I would say, and this book takes a topic that's always been a little confusing for me (the ocean and ships, etc) and spun it into a great, easily understandable story.
The plotlines are great as well! There is a good number of plot twists, and the main one blew my socks off!
I also loved that there is a lot of diversity in this book (Indians, autistic people, Brazilian people, people who've changed their legal name)- as an Indian, it's refreshing to see Indian characters in these kinds of fiction books. I simply cannot wait for the next book/s in this series (as Daughter of the Deep is the first in a series of sci-fi books by Riordan) and I fully believe that there will be more, just as diverse characters, who also have diverse sexualities and gender identities.
TL;DR: Loved the book! It's the perfect gift for people of all ages. There's a lot of learning you gain subconsciously, there's a diverse cast of characters, the writing and representation is great, plot points and plot twists are portrayed perfectly, there are realistic characters, and there are so many more great things about this book that I'm sure I'm missing out on. Can't wait for the rest of the series to come out with equally as diverse representation- 100/10, fully recommend it!!

I loved this book! It started out a bit slow, but by the middle/end I was turning the pages. The premise circulating around 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which is one of my favorite books, is fascinating. For the most part, it was believable enough for me to get hooked on the story. I would have liked a bit more closure at the end, but that’s my only significant complaint. Ana is a relatable and lovable character, and I did get invested. Contains the trademark Riordan humor. Read this book if you like Rick Riordan and/or are interested in science and sea exploration of the unknown.tatianars's review against another edition

I really liked all the different representation (I think Rick is getting better at the represention thing and it’s very nice) but I also think this might be the first book I’ve read that has the female MC actually get her period and have it effect her day-to-day stuff, which I was really happy about seeing.
One note I have is that it felt kinda cliffhanger-y (and we know Rick loves those cliffhangers) but at the same time it… doesn’t feel that way? Like I feel as if that last chapter was saying both “hey there’s gonna be more “ but also “it’s the end but it’s up to your interpretation what happens next” and I don’t really like that. I’m pretty sure this has been marketed as a standalone so I’m assuming it’ll stay that way but I do think it could end up being a series or a duology or something. Good book though :)
