The Survivors

Jane Harper

3.66 AVERAGE

A standalone from the author of the Aaron Falk mysteries. A murder in a small Australian beach town brings back a 12 year old mystery, stirring up emotions in the town. If you can get your hands on the audio, I enjoyed the narrator (added bonus of Australian accent)

Oh that was good! I thought I had it figured out but OH I was so wrong. Jane Harper never misses 🤌🏻

Definitely curious to check out the Netflix series after this one!

Really wanted to like this one since the quick synopsis I read on Book of the Month seemed intriguing, but this book fell very flat for me. I didn’t connect with many of the characters given none of them were really fleshed out or given full color, so for the first 100 pages it was hard to discern them from one another. I also wasn’t super impressed by the writing, which was overall pretty unmemorable.

The most disappointing thing was that every big “reveal” was super tame, where no one actually did “the bad thing” and any tragic incidents are only *indirectly* a character’s fault. It would’ve been far more interesting had some of the red herrings come to fruition - and on that note, this book had WAY too many of them. I liked a lot of the theories I came up with along the way much better than the actual ending, which was for a lack of a better descriptor, just pretty stupid. I really wanted to like this one and thought the plot would bring so much more to the table, but it was very unmemorable and pretty disappointing.

I found this to be a good book in the end. It is a hard read in the first chapters. I could not understand the importance of the Survivors. Eventually, you figure this out. I was mad at the mother of the main character and his father. If an accident happens you should not blame your son. Overall I liked this book.
