I loved the way this book was described, the parallels between swells in musical compositions to the emotions and experiences the characters were going through. I have a musical background and it feel restorative to read and see that expressed again.

The characters are complicated and they’re not, depending on who we’re talking about. There was a moment bearing the climax of the book that I was on the street of my seat, truly unsure of how the author would write it. That paralleled the emotions of the supporting characters and I applaud that aspect of Claycomb’s wordsmithery.

It is heavy and dark, but that is to be expected with Andersen’s fairy tales. It did remind me a bit of Song of the Sea, and I made a lot of imagery connections to that.

There were some aspects of the flow of the story that I think could have been fleshed out a little more, perhaps to make them more believable within the story and not just something that we’d have to come up with imagery for ourselves. I would have liked a little more character development within the characters as well.

Overall, however, I think this was a perfect summer read for those who are drawn to the more mysterious and emotional aisles of the library for their summer selections.
