A cute mostly fluffy book. It could’ve been shorter and there wasn’t much romance but it was cute.
Another cute and clever storyline. Not as much humor as in other titles, but the pickle that the characters find themselves in is a real challenge. I’ve come to appreciate Ms. Enoch’s efforts to have characters from different socio-economic classes demonstrate an effort to do their best against the odds.
2.75 stars. Ehhh... While perfectly well-written as always and we'll enough plotted this is NOT A ROMANCE like I thought. A stretch to call it women's lit.... More like mom lit and definitely not my thing. Glad it all ended well but I will be very careful with Enoch's future novels after this experience and took me entirely too long to slog through.

The first few chapters did not sit well and I almost dumped the book, but stuck it out. The book ended as expected and the side characters made the plot a little thicker.
This Regency romance was a refreshingly different take on the marriage of convenience trope. Two childhood friends marry so Emmeline can inherit her family estate and to help William with his political career. The catch, in order to keep the property, Emmeline must produce an heir within five years.
Due to fertility issues, this never happened but Emmeline made up a young son and daughter and in order to protect the lie, she and William go to an orphanage to find two children who will be able to stand in as their actual offspring.
I did find the whole shopping for an orphan to perpetuate a lie a bit cringey at the start but eventually the children grow on the couple and this unique found family manage to become a real one. Charming and heartwarming and great on audio.
Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review. Something in the heir definitely made it into my standout historical romance reads of the year alongside A lady for a duke and Always be my duchess.

Desperate to maintain her hold on her childhood home, Emmeline takes some creative license in fulfilling the terms outlined in the contract enforced by her grandfather, the Duke of Welshire. From rushing to beat her cousin to the altar to fabricating an heir or two, Emmeline will do whatever it takes to keep Winnover Hall in her name. But when her grandfather calls all of his descendants to come celebrate his birthday, Emmeline's carefully crafted plans are thrown into a tailspin, and she and her husband must arrive at the party with "their" children.
This has an interesting premise--one I don't believe I have encountered before--and I was excited to see where it went. And while the story is cute, it is also lighter on the romance than I was expecting.
With multiple points-of-view, from Emmeline to William to some of the servants to the children to a visitor at Winnover Hall, the story is less traditional romance and more about what people are willing to do for themselves and for those they love.
This one has a childhood friends to marriage of convenience situation but does not follow the typical paths of those tropes. Instead, in the course of William and Emmeline's unexpected joint scheming and the hijinks surrounding it, we watch their partnership become a true union and a family being formed.
I received an advance copy from St. Martin's Press and NetGalley. All review opinions are my own.
