This book wasn't quite what I expected, but that's not a bad thing. I expected the Pershings to take these kids to Emmeline's grandfather's party and it would be more of a clash between two worlds. But the story takes so long to get to the party - it's more about them becoming a family and Emmy and Will learning to love each other.

This one is pretty low spice - the focus being on the two children and the Pershings' relationship to them and each other. But still fun and enjoyable. And definitely funny in all the right places. This would be a fun rom-com movie, if Hollywood did historical romance comedy films.

Cute, but would have liked more of the romance. Did get a bit tedious to get though, premise was a little out there and ending was eh.

This was so sweet and delightful.

Just for fun. Delightful characters, especially young George and Rose, a Rube Goldberg of a plot. Audio version is a delight.

Ra's Mini Review!~

Characters:
Emmeline & William: I love how much of a team they were and how they slowly regained a romantic love for each other. George & Rose were so cute! George was so grumpy and protective and I loved how sweet and silly Rose was. Sometimes authors write children too adult like but these too were perfect. They also had their own worries and ideas as 3 dimensional people.

Plot:
The plot is insane and so fun. The concept was unique and made me excited to read. I do however feel like it dragged. The story itself is very simple and I found myself wanting the scenes to move much quicker especially when they didn't seem very crucial to the plot. I was so annoyed when the brother character was introduced in the middle. I know it was to build character relationships but it felt overly long.

Secret Sauce:
I love the tone of this book. It's humorous and fun. I love how the inner thoughts of characters and the dialogue is written. It feels like contemporary humor but not so much it takes me out of the book at all. I love the concept of two people relearning and recognizing changes in the other even though they've been together for years. I hadn't seen this before, especially in a marriage of convenience story where characters usually quickly fall in love.

3.5 stars. Cute story, fun characters. Bought on a whim because it was on sale. Probably not making the cut to stay on my shelves long-term but it was a decent read.

Ugh this book. It took me forever to finish because I did not want to spend any time with these characters. They are just bad people, lying to everyone, trying to “borrow” friends’ children, etc. They are the worst. One spouse weaves intricate stories to both families about fake children but doesn’t tell the other spouse AND it never comes up in 7 years!!? I’m sorry, doesn’t matter how distant they are from extended family, NO ONE in seven years visited to meet their grandchildren but they are so invested in their existence that it required the fabrication of the children? Makes no sense. And this all happened in chapter 2. The incredulity goes down from there. I can suspend a certain amount of disbelief when reading a light book like this but not to this level.
