4.5 stars. This volume stays very true to the tone and feel of the show, with enough of a fresh approach that it feels like it felt watching Angel for the first time. Artwork is beautiful and tonally perfect. Looking forward to the next one!

I am a major fan of Buffy and Angel to this day years beyond years later, so as no surprise I loved this graphic novel. I love the world, the story line and jumping timelines was great. The art is incredibly beautiful the color the likeness to the main characters. Fabulous!

still not an Angel fan yet. Maybe the reboot will change things for me, but the brooding is already getting on my nerves.

- 5 stars and i absolutely don't understand the low average rating on this?????
- the biggest complaint i see is that they didn't like the villain but this volume clearly wasn't even about the villain, it's about angel?????
- ANYWAY can't imagine not liking this because it's genuinely so good and i'm loving this universe and re-imagining, it is SO much fun and enjoyable
- i cannot wait to keep reading these, i have the second buffy volume ready to go and i know i'm gonna love it just like i did the first one and this volume
- as someone who wasn't that interested in the angel show as much as i was buffy, i already love this so much more so in case y'all were curious, this IS good i promise, so please read this in spite of those poor ratings anyway
- i'm an angel apologist on the show (don't @ me) and this volume already made me love him, like that's my actual baby y'all

This was great and I need more right now. I can’t wait for the crossover with Buffy and I love how they incorporate technology without feeling too hacky.

I had an easier time with this than the Buffy reboot in some ways, because it's so far off Angel's origin story that it wasn't competing for space with my head canon. They've steered away from from the Romany curse here (as some with Romany connections, I found this didn't actually improve anything. Better, more thoroughly researched representation would have been better IMO.) Anyway, Angel is less directionlessly bad here, instead being more focused and big scheme evil (remember in the series that he's far more like a serial killer and murder is his art, which actually makes him more terrifying) which I found a little trite. And consequently he seems even more irritatingly whiny with a soul - seriously how many times can a character say they deserve torment in one graphic novel? So the ambivalence continues. By and large I enjoyed it but more as a light diversion than a serious competitor to the original.
