“I am thee and thou art me and all of one is the other. And feel now. Thou hast no heart but mine”

It starts slowly, yes. But I've cried for weeks when it was over. My favorite book ever.

I really enjoyed this beautiful book despite its length. I especially liked the literal translations of Spanish (using thou, etc.) which made the reader's immersion in Spain more total and maybe mirrored Robert's/Hemingway's own thought process as people for whom Spanish is a second language. The romance with Maria was sweet at times, and Pilar, Pablo, and Anselmo were great characters, especially Pilar. A few keywords: tragic, brooding, romanticized, and leftist in a self-reflective way. Some questions brought up include: how should we feel about killing? How should we feel about our own death? Is our own death worth it for a hopeless cause?

Best book I've ever read.
adventurous emotional slow-paced

Really strong characters and relationships I enjoyed most of the dialogue. Overall pretty meh experience, nothing extremely wonderful about this book. Love redeems war is maybe a big theme - lot of time focused on Robert and Maria living in the moment knowing they don't have long. I think the Old Man and the Sea is Hemingway's best tbh.

"What a people they are, she thought. What a people are the Spaniards, 'and if he was so short he should not have tried to be a matador.' And I hear it and say nothing. I have no rage for that and having made an explanation I am silent. How simple it is when one knows nothing. Que sencillo! Knowing nothing one says, 'He was not much of a matador.' Knowing nothing another says, 'He was tubercular.' And another says, after one, knowing, has explained, 'If he was so short he should not have tried to be a matador'.
