She knocks individual sentences out of the park. Overall, I liked it, but wasn't blown away.
i can’t believe i’m giving one star to lorrie moore but unfortunately, i hated every story in this collection
Well written, but just such a downer. I got the feeling that the author was disillusioned with where she's at in life, (or has been at for a number of years,) and the hopelessness really saturated each story.
Lorrie Moore is a brilliant writer. I think she is one of the best short story writers out there today. Not perfect, but brilliant. Who Will Run the Frog Hospital remains my favorite.
This is a book of short stories. I thought it was good but not her best. I would recommend reading Birds of America or Anagrams.
I totally dug this collection! Some of the stories had me cracking up laughing. These are bold stories, for sure, and lots of fun-—dark fun.
None of the stories in this collection made me care what happened, with the possible exception of "Wings". Somewhere between a 2 and a 3 in my book. Rounding down because I expected so much more.

Reading these stories, I was always very aware of Moore's writing, and how clever she was trying to be. None of the characters felt like real people, but were always characters. Would anyone really describe bridesmaid's dresses as the colors of prescription anti-anxiety meds? The effect is simultaneously cutesy and depressing.
