In this book, Celaena loses some of her teenage insecurities and becomes more of a truly badass assassin which is what I wanted from her. While she still has some moral hangups when she kills I appreciate that the author allows her intense training to take over. There is really nothing more annoying than when a character trains for years under a merciless teacher and then has pages long internal monologues when they try to kill someone. I appreciate that while Celaena does have qualms after her kills she doesn’t let that stop her from finishing the job when it’s necessary.
I was sad to see Nehemia go but I did feel that her death was critical for moving the plot along and exposing Archer’s teachery. I personally was happy to see Archer killed off at the end of the book by Celaena. The author does a good job of keeping the balance in that Celaena has compassions towards her targets but that is a thin layer easy to break when they say something wrong.

“It is punishable by death to speak of or to encourage magic. It is an affront to the gods, and an affront to me that you sang such a song in my hall.”

Celaena Sardothien is now the Kings Champion, Assassin, and spy. When the King of Rifthold gives her a list of people that he knows is growing a rebellion against him, he wants them dead, and he wants proof. When she sees a name she recognizes from her past, she knows that she will be able to turn the tides of his evil rule, but will she be in time. As she unraveled the mysteries I found myself captivated, my heart was full (the waltz comes to mind) and then it wasn’t, and I was crying. The author has all the right buttons to make a significant impression with her readers, and this book made me immediately pick up the next. I know I will be sad when this series is over, so I am taking my time and savoring the beautiful world of TOG.

“Some things you hear with your ears. Others, you hear with your heart.”

Note: I am following the reading guide created by T.L. Branson and reading in the Romantic/Emotional order.

Read this for the second time almost ten years after reading it the first time–this time around doing a buddy read so I can finally finish this series. Let me tell you I am IN THIS. Very invested. So far I've definitely been tracking how each book feels individually versus in the larger series arc. Each book ends with the promise of things to come, for sure, but I'm not feeling frustrated by cliffhangers or "filler books." Onward!

A good book. I’ll read the next to learn more about this world and the characters, but I preferred the first two books to this one.

A great sequel to the first "Throne of Glass!" I enjoyed this book more than the first one! SJM is great at keeping you hooked with a mystery! Though the ending felt a little obvious, I loved how it came to pass.
