Part of me misses the crazed romps through history. The other part is really enjoying the darker tone story has taken. I think the story is really ramping up. Also I would love for Clive Ronan to just be captured. I’m sorta over his whole thing.

Taylor writes things like the following:

"‘There’s been some damage here. What happened? Not Ronan again?’
‘Shrapnel. We blew up a couple of rocks.’
He looked around in alarm. ‘You’re not doing it again today, are you?’
‘No, of course not.’
‘Come to your senses?’
‘Run out of rocks.’"

on a regular basis and that makes The Chronicles of St. Mary's something that's always worth reading. Well that, and for people like me, for whom history is all a bit of a muddle, it's always a good lesson in specific events, even if I still have trouble remembering them after the book is done.

Despite the star down for the ending, and for dragging on a bit with our antagonist, and depressing her fans regularly, I still highly recommend these for the interest of the historical bits, the strength of Max despite all the world throws at her, and even more terrifically funny bits. Here's another in case you needed it. At 19%, Holcombe is finally released from the hospital and is back bothering the historians, when "somewhere at the very back of the Hall, the handbell rang again and an anonymous voice called, ‘Unclean ... unclean ...’" Later, at about 22%, the director of St. Mary's holds a meeting and notes that "‘In a not-unrelated item, I should make it clear that from this moment onwards, the practice of walking in front of Mr Halcombe, ringing a handbell and shouting “Unclean, unclean,” is to cease forthwith." What more can you ask for?

Max continues her incompetent blundering though time being kidnapped, kid apped, getting shot contracting diseases etc etc and it's a thoroughly enjoyable romp too. I'd love her not to be quite so accident prone, I can't see any boss in the world keeping her in the job, and I'd like to see less of Ronan, who is basically the nemesis of Max, clever, thinking and sensible plans and rarely getting into the scrapes Max does. Still, these minor points aside I love the style of writing and the story line and in particular the historical trips.

This book was a lot of fun, I really loved being able to go back and explore 14th century St. Mary’s. Look forward to the next book.
