Maybe I just wasn't in the mood, but I found this a slow plodding yarn.
(why use 1 word, when 100 will do type book)
Sorry, just didn't enjoy it! It rambled on like a Virginia Woolf novel which is another author I can't get to grips with.

A very enjoyable read with original, feminist and satirical perspectives into the greed, avarice and selfishness of the English upper classes in the 1920s and earlier. The novel, written in 1931, is mostly from the point of view of Lady Slane, a recently widowed old lady nearing the end of her life and reflecting on how she deferred her artistic ambitions for a cold-ish but comfortable life of marriage and family. Lady Slane has a final chance of self fulfillment when her husband dies and she relishes her new freedom to rent a house with just her maid and herself. Here she finds new friendships and insights into her life and her own selfishness and sense of waste, and society, but finally happy to understand it is possible for her own granddaughter to live independently as an artist although she, Lady Slane, has done nothing to support or encourage her in this.
“simplify life as one might, one could not wholly escape its enormous complication”
my favorite type of book: no plot, just characters thinking, revisiting old memories, and living their lives. i would have loved if she had done a book of short stories telling with the side characters such as debora and kay. how amazing would that be?
