This book hit me emotionally. And after reading it, I am thankful for life and everything within. The book has lots of twists and turns. The one thing about it which I liked was for the first maybe 150 pages you have zero twists and all the characters are being set up for the roller coaster ride which is the second half and then you are being hit constant with twist after twist until the last page.  But I do have to say that not all twists were shocking. There were some which were mouth opening.

I feel like describing a synopsis of the novel would give away how the author has intended it to write for us. So I will refrain from that.

But I do warn that it will emotionally drain you and there is themes of rape and self harm in it.

a lot of unexpected plot twists, the writing style is really interesting - definitely dated but overall a really good read

I'm unsure how to rate this book tbh. The plot was intriguing, I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened but the characters were... Unlikeable at best. Also I love twists and turns in a story, but the way the twists played out in this book felt like Jane Corry was kind of making it up as she wrote.

Speaking of the writing, it was strange. In one paragraph you could jump from a detailed description of a few minutes of time, then the next sentence is a vague description of what was happening a few hours (or even days) later. Very weird pacing.

The end, when it jumps to 5 years later, is honestly a huge disappointment. To find out that Alison had a plan of her own AFTER finding out about Crispin's plan was very very strange. No hints of it at all throughout the book, again just seemed like an afterthought that Corry tacked on at the end just to add another unnecessary twist.

I know I've done nothing but complain about the book, but the story itself was pretty entertaining. Worth a read but I wouldn't expect anything groundbreakingly good.

Definitely a three-star read. I had a great time reading and enjoyed a lot of aspects of the book, especially characterization and the fact that the prisoners were so humanized.

However, the writing was a little over-bloated with unnecessary lines and could’ve been cut down. As well, the twist at the end felt cheap. I would’ve enjoyed the book more without it.
