Yes, this is a science fiction series based upon a role playing game, and because of that, one wouldn't expect much from it. This book however, has been much better than most that I've read recently. Through this series, Abnett has been praised for his realism. How the action conveys the danger and the hellish nature of war. This is the first book of the series that goes way beyond that. The first four books, Abnett sets up the world. It is a unique and far reaching world with literally hundreds of characters, so it takes nearly this long to get invested in these characters, but what Abnett does so masterfully in this fifth volume is the emotional investment in the characters. Gravity for the main characters begins as some of them begin to fall, and real feeling seeps in as the relationships and uniqueness of character is beautifully unraveled. Great series.
