I felt like this book had SO much going on that a lot of things that could have been really amazing just fell kind of flat for me. The expanded world building was so fun and interesting, but we hardly got to spend any real time in any one place to actually feel immersed or connected to it. Some side characters really gained more depth to them, while others seemed like such an afterthought that I forgot they were even there. The mysteries that I loved to theorize about in the earlier books felt convoluted; there’s just so many of them and you receive so few answers that it just feels unsatisfactory. So many new ideas and mysteries were introduced that felt disconnected from the earlier books, like it was just becoming unnecessarily complicated. The structure of this book followed the structure of the first two SO closely that it never gave me the same sense of adventure and tension that I loved in the earlier books, since it felt like I had read it all before. Even the writing itself didn’t feel as quality. The series has always relied heavily on dialogue, which in earlier books felt fast paced and engaging, but this one felt so dialogue heavy that I never felt really immersed in the actual settings it was taking place in, which was especially challenging when there were so many new settings being introduced. All of that being said, I will absolutely be reading the rest of the series.

One question. When will they become third years, Rebecca? 😅

My summary: After the traumatizing events of the past 1.5 years, Violet just wants to save her family, friends, her love, and her country. Now, Violet and her squad mates must travel beyond the wards to search for Andarna's kind and for a cure. They hope that perhaps their findings will aid in the ongoing war against the Venin.

My thoughts: Overall, Onyx Storm is a fun time for everyone who loved the first two books in the series. There were so many hilarious moments, close calls, dragons, romantic tension, and epic battles that I thoroughly enjoyed. But, now that I've had time to process this novel, I do think there was a lot of unnecessary plot lines with way too many side characters. Maybe I'll eat my words and all of these plots and people will be extremely important to the rest of the series; if not, a lot of them seemed superfluous. However, I still had a great time reading this book and would still recommend it to people who enjoyed the first two.

I don’t know how to review this book lol. I love the vibes and I like the action happening. I can’t keep the characters straight or all the locations we’re flying to but even I have to finally admit that there’s plot holes 😬. But does it really matter? It’s compelling and I just could not stop reading. I end up caring about certain characters and getting my heart broken over and over again. But then you fall in love with a new character and keep going. I don’t mind finishing the series. It ends on a cliffhanger but to me, I’m not desperate for the next book the way I was after fourth wing lol. I’m just enjoying the book for what it is: fun romantasy that plays on my emotions 😬

As someone with EDS this series will always have a special place in my heart. While I found the ending of the previous book to be incredibly frustrating, I do like the direction this book took. However, I feel like some of the plot points are a little too predictable at times. Overall it was an enjoyable read, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the future.
