An interesting historical read, but (as has been noted in other reviews here) not a particularly brilliant bit of writing. The casual racism, sexism, dismissal of the realities of mental illness, and homophobia is part and parcel of the time and while a bit distasteful isn't what dropped the rating down to three stars for me. Actually, if Mr. Hooker had been able to write about the war and his relationships and supposed exploits with the intensity and skill that he applied to the surgical sections it might have been an incredible book. Really, the only reason why the book retains any importance is due to the quality of the film and television series that drew on it for inspiration. All that said, it's a quick and light read and it's interesting to see the origins of the various bits that ended up in the later adaptations.

I picked this up because it was on sale as an audiobook and I really liked the TV series (I've seen the movie once). Characters are a little bit different (though basically the same), and the book follows along the movie - a complete story rather than a series of episodes. It made me cringe in a few places because of the misogyny and racist commentary (though it was expected, it's just still cringeworthy to mine socially advanced ears).

The book, IMO was far inferior to the show (and somewhat to the movie). The characters were just a little flatter to me, the humor didn't quite play out, but again, I really enjoyed the show.

3 1/2 stars. Thoroughly enjoyable, but not quite 4 stars.

I wasn't expecting to like this but I really enjoyed it!
