I will admit that as I read this book, the visuals of the characters from the television show were always present in my head. Having said that, this novel touched me in a way that the television show didn't. This is an examination of war off of the battlefield that highlights the damage that armed conflicts on everyone involved.

An enjoyable, quick read. Direct and to the point, with no waisted words. Darkly funny, with lovable but deeply flawed characters at its heart. I never watched the movie or the show, but I instantly knew why they were so beloved by fans.

Good book. Quick read. I recommend.

DID NOT FINISH

Not impressed. I can't believe that this book spawned both an Academy Award movie AND an Emmy Award television show.

Each character is given a complete history. That sounded like every main character has a rich background. No. EVERY CHARACTER has a COMPLETE HISTORY. Why do I need to know the reason somebody has a nickname while his actual name is something Vi, who appears on 3 pages?

I get why everybody has a nickname, but the inconsistency of the narrator's used of those names is pretty annoying. Let the characters talk that way. I

The book itself is PAINFUL. IT's obviously written about the author's time in the army.

Forgot I had read this. Recall enjoying it.

Yeah, this wasn't my cup of tea. It wasn't very well written, in this fool's opinion, and there was little or no progression to the "story". It was to me simply a collection of sophomoric expressions of indignance by irreverent conscripts devoid of any personal development, sprinkled with a liitle bit of medicine, history, and personal recollection. Not that there needs to be a progressing story to a stylized memoir, but this is sold as a fictional novel, so you would think it might come to some kind of head, but it doesn't. It just rolls along with nothing.
Maybe I need to read it again, sometime when I'm tired as hell and hiding from something with a dry martini.
