had a lot of fun with this. i found personification writing style very fun and interesting. sparked a lot of curiosity for me and inspired me to learn more.
personal essays are always going to feel a little self indulgent but i enjoyed them.
And as with any collection, some hit more than others. My favorites were ‘how to draw a sperm whale’ and ‘pure life’

A halfway between learning about marine life and learning about those individuals who live on the edge of society. The author has suffered a number of traumas and also looks into the traumas of otverse and mixes those experiences with those of marine life. I did not know how dark this book could get and I don't know if I would have read it if I knew. But I finished and i'm glad that I did.

This is gorgeous, and the metaphor works much better than I ever could have imagined. However, I don't recommend listening to the audiobook. I think the essays, which are incredibly literary and mostly braided, are meant to be better understood through the layout and whitespace. The acknowledgments say there is art, but obviously you don't see it if you don't read it. This is a very beautiful intertwining of queer lives/love/family and marine science - just make sure you read it!
