Is one wrong action okay if you can do a hundred or more right actions afterward because of it? This is the question the main character, Rodion, struggles with. Rodion was on track to be a professor specializing in the law, but he’s barely surviving. If he could just get ahead, he thinks that things could be so much better—not just for himself, but those around him.
There are many aspects of Crime and Punishment that I found engaging, but I just can’t recommend it since I honestly didn’t like it. There are so many parts that drag and drag that I had to push through. Without giving away any spoilers, Rodion has a fever and is quite delirious for part of the book. But there are 100 pages devoted to this fever. It’s just too much. Sometimes I felt like there were extra, fluffy characters that didn’t serve a true purpose. I think with more intentional editing this could’ve been better, but perhaps I’m an outlier on the Dostoevsky train.
