I enjoyed so so much of this book. The most interesting perspective and narrator which allowed for both complete distance from the plot and complete involvement. McEwan as usual is extremely skilled.
Where this book loses a star are the almost self-insert author moments scattered throughout. I was enjoying the quirkiness and ridiculousness of the narrators tangents in the first half of the book but eventually they got old and interrupted what was otherwise an extremely riveting and suspenseful plot.

One of the strangest books I've read. Such an interesting way to tell a story from the perspective of the baby in the womb. Sometimes the narrative voice was a bit off-putting because it came across as pompous and rambled on, but it was fascinating and a great ending.

This is probably the most uniquely written book i’ve ever read. I loved it! Story of a mom’s affair and a murder from the perspective of a snobby baby in utero. For moments you’re sucked into the story with discussing wine selections and every day life. then you’re reminded this is through the eyes of someone not even born lol. Def interested in more of his books

Like...this book is weird...
This book is told entirely from the point of view of a baby in the womb, an interesting POV for sure but at times just plain weird.
When the writing style was described as "Stylistically Complex", I knew I was in trouble. This book is only 200 pages, so you can only imagine how many of those were wasted by endless droning about pointless details.
I can see how a lot of people can appreciate the literary aspects of this book, even I could appreciate some of the passages. But in the end, for me, it was just a wordy, meh story that I wouldn't have read if it wasn't for a bookclub.

More like a hundred stars.
Wow.
Wow.
Easily the best book I have read in 2019 and the best Hamlet-inspired novel I have ever come across. Every sentence was a source of joy and admiration. Beautiful.

"I count myself an innocent, but it seems I am party to a plot. My mother, bless her loudly squelching heart, seems to be involved."
A quick read that is satisfying and so clever!
