The triumphant end to a saga. I have now finished the entire series. The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. I can’t say that I have a favorite. They all are great in their own right. Truly a masterful storyteller!

As spring rises into summer, at last the verses of Middle-earth become the songs of war. In the west, Men and their allies make their final stand against the great Evil of their age, while the fellowship of the two ring-bearers inch their way toward Doom. Of the three/six books that make up the saga, this one/pair may be the most stirring and emotional. Tolkien's prose is face melting, and amid the din, we see the triumphs of the Other three hobbits, the unyielding temerity of Merry, Pippin, and especially Samwise. Book Six has some of the same sluggish problems as Book One, which keeps it from reaching the same plane as Two Towers for me, but at its best Return of the King soars, and it sings. A most masterful end to the era's great epic tale.
