Rounding up from a 4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this book was not what I was expecting in a good way. Very heavy topics but really well written and kept me guessing until the last page

"High above the tallest dune a star appears in the sky. Faint at first, then gaining strength until it becomes a brilliant jewel.
And yet I know it is death I'm seeing. The flickering out. The silent gasp. The sputtering beauty. A desperate flame –massive, transcendent– fighting for its last breath."

This was a really devastating story.
The writing is so beautiful and atmospheric, it was so easy to dive into Elle's world right from the start. I kind of wanted to stay there a little longer.
I loved the setting at the paper palace and the fact that nature and especially the pond/water played such an important role throughout the story. So so many metaphors, really well done.
I also really loved the storytelling: the timeline often (not always) alternating between the present (only a 24hrs time span) and the past (over 60 years), everything leading up to the present and the rest of the 24hrs.
Some bits slightly reminded me of One Day. It definitely left a lasting impression.

Very very heavy topics, very graphic and unfiltered, be sure to check TWs!

This one really hooked me. The twists and depth just kept increasing in momentum. Super complex, like real life, instead of a rose-colored version of such. Definitely kept me turning every page.

i really wanted to love the paper palace, but unfortunately, it just didn’t work for me.

if you take away anything from this review it’s this: please check the trigger warnings for this one!!! I definitely made the mistake of not checking beforehand
