tragic characters, they're hard to read sometimes. arthur miller had this talent for making their stories readable.

both main characters make terrible mistakes, have awful flaws, and although it isn't as black and white to just condemn them without a thought, their actions are unforgivable. they destroy the lives of others and those around them, and that's what makes these play so compelling to me even in 2024.

it's a shame we can't just easily go and watc ha play; we have to read them like books. ive been lucky enough to see both of these (a long time ago) performed and it does add a huge amount; the impact on each character is multiplied when acted out onstage.
