Pros:
  • Easy to read. Does get me hooked despite the issues I had.
  • Interesting and engaging start.
  • I can appreciate the sentiment behind the story.

Cons:
  • Violet was just a boring character. Finch was a little more interesting but not that memorable and didn’t feel like a male version of ‘manic pixie dream girl’. I remember more of the ‘angst’ and his ‘romantic gestures’ of his character more than Finch himself.
  • Did not feel much romantic chemistry between the two and didn’t care for their romance. Didn’t like how their romance was kinda like a ‘solution’ to their personal issues or make them some ‘tragic couple to root for’.
  • Side characters were incredibly forgettable.
  • I felt the author didn’t portray mental illness that well. I wouldn’t go as far to say it was offensive tho, but just not written that well where some parts felt distasteful for me. Such as
the scavenger hunt for Violet  around the end of the book after Finch committed suicide. So she can find closure. Almost as if it’s romanticization in a way and used to get the readers to cry rather than what mental health could do to a person if not gotten the help they needed.
The whole thing felt so goofy.
  • Teenage angst really went up the roof and to my nerves as well ( I even read this in high school but teen me was so done). Like we get it, life is hard and we all got our issues to deal with. But the events and personal issues of the main characters could’ve been handled differently.
  • Still bothered romance and mental illness, since it seemed like the author really wanted to address it in such a serious manner, shouldn’t mix tbh. It was as if romance could “help” if you suffer from mental illness.
The way Violet handled Finch’s death was very different from how she handled her sister’s death for some reason? Unless that was her development…

Overall:
When I first started this book, I was intrigued with the characters and where the story will go. Unfortunately, I was left unsatisfied in the end. Especially how the ending played out. I wasn’t a fan how this book covered such serious topics while having the ‘love solves problems’ cliche. There are times where I felt like the book tried too hard to make the reader sad that I just couldn’t feel anything. Again, I do appreciate with what the author was trying to do, but this missed the mark for me.

Favorite Quote:
“We are all alone, trapped in these bodies and our own minds, and whatever company we have in this life is only fleeting and superficial.“

This book is one of the best books I have ever read. While reading this book, there were many times where I had to reflect on myself. The strong character bonds and hardships were very emotional for me as the reader. While reading this book, the characters reminded me of myself in some areas. There were mental health struggles as the main thing, and it has reminded me of myself and other people. During the process of this book, you could really see the character growth, and really learn to understand them.

Please please please, if you read this book, check the trigger warnings. This book focuses heavily on death, suicide, and mental illness in general. That said, the author handled it well and represented it beautifully. People suffering don't always present that way. Especially high school kids trying to fit in or find themselves. This was a beautiful story about a first love -a real love- between a girl who was grieving and not living and a boy who was fascinated by suicide and how to die by your own terms. All the while, no one knew his true thoughts.
