Rather slow, but wasn't bad.

I really enjoyed the story and it was a challenging read.

Classic Eliot. Compact, saccharine (particular Chapter 16), and infused with her typical collapsing of the philosophical and moral. There are some troubling ideas here - there seems to be a conflation of greed, revenge, addiction, and the working class which bends towards an elitist and anti-feminist vibe - but it's hard not to love the book nonetheless because it keeps up its ambivalence into the wonderfully happy ending. Like I said, classic Eliot.

if reading for high school english classes was an exercise in reading classics with high expectations and being horribly disappointed by them (... the great gatsby, jane eyre), i think that college classes is an exercise reading books you've never heard of, with low expectations, and really enjoying them. my favorite of the shakespeare plays we read for how shakespeare works was measure for measure, i enjoyed the wild asses' skin FAR more than i thought, and silas marner? silas marner was short and lovely, with some moments of shockingly witty phrasing and truth.

Took too long to get good. Only started enjoying it after the first half.
