Beautiful, cried so much.
John Lewis’s story is upsettingly still aggressively relevant for today’s current world.

“But the hardest part to learn— to truly understand, deep in your heart—was how to find love for your attacker. Do not let them shake your faith in non-violence— love them!”

A beautiful story about the Civil Rights Movement from the perspective of John Lewis, who helped organize the first sit-ins. I really enjoyed the author’s ability to inspire courage and kindness to the people he led and how he helped shaped the future.

I liked how well the art helps guide you through the story, with details helping guide the way of where to read next. It was a nice introduction to John Lewis and how he experienced the beginning of the civil rights movement.

Really powerful. I learned a lot. The art is very stark, but it definitely works.

This book relays some of the history and events of the civil rights movement in the US as experienced by John Lewis. The graphic novel format is a thoughtful and accessible form of an important story. I am looking forward to continuing with the next installment of this series.
