A truly enjoyable and informative WW2 saga detailing the heroism of two sisters. Kristin Hannah’s incredible talent immerses the reader so effortlessly that one must remind oneself that it is 2025 and not German-occupied France. Personally, I learned so much from this novel. The novel often reminded me how little we are actually taught about world history. I appreciate Hannah’s aim to pull the curtain from our eyes: to see how women included themselves in the war, the challenges they faced, as well as how integral their actions were to the war effort. I guarantee you will love this tale of unsung heroes.

This was a great piece of storytelling and story weaving.  Points taken off due to some language scattered throughout, as well as some more mature themes being a bit more descriptive (though not explicit) than I would have preferred. If sexual assault is a trigger for you, I suggest you find a different novel. For those reasons, I recommend that the reader be out of their teenage years before reading this novel.

Taking place in France during WWII, this story follows the tale of two sisters, who endured and fought in two very different ways to save as many people as they could. As a mom, this book hit different than it would have in a previous season of my life, as it explores the heartbreak of loss that sits in tension with the joy that motherhood holds.

The ending was superb. It had every element that I suspected (as I got nearer to the conclusion) and wished for. I have nothing negative to say about it, whatsoever. It pushed my rating up a whole point, honestly.

All in all, this was a good historical fiction novel - just be aware of the warnings I listed at the top. Unfortunately, they are probably going to keep me from returning to this book in the future for a reread.

this book has the tone of every other matt damon american-idealism-tinted wwii movie but with rivers of chick lit melodrama running through it

4 STARS🌟 This is heart-wrenching. It is beautifully written. I loved it and hated it at the same time. Made me realize how cruel the war really is. I don't want to go through these ugly feelings ever again. Otherwise this is a 5 star read!

This book gave me a whirlwind of emotions. I felt like I was in the story with the characters and I felt every emotion conveyed on the pages of this book. I now understand how grief, familial love, and friendship feels.

I feel a lot of things about this book that I am not able to put into words. It’s beautiful and tragic, interwoven with this bleeding hope for something better.
I didn’t cry until the end, when she had to get rid of Arti, and the men were talking about how much they lost. How he is their future. Tears.
it was so emotional to read and informative. 100/10

As much as I feel like I should be writing paragraphs about my experience reading this book, for now, I’ll just leave it at “Wow, I loved that.” Maybe once I’ve had time to dry my eyes a bit, I’ll come back and leave something more detailed, but for now, this is all I got. I loved it.
