Magical realism is one of my guilty pleasure genres. This book reminded me of Sarah Allen Addison’s books. Definitely recommend for a fun little read.

I really enjoyed this book! It was such a nice comfort read for me and the story is cute. Very Hallmark but I loved it. Definitely a good message of choosing yourself, finding happiness, doing the work to get through grief, etc.

Welcome to small town life in Alabama. where everyone knows your business and has an opinion. Anna Kate returns to the hometown her mother fled years ago after a tragic evenet.
She plans on settling her grandmother's estate and be gone . Natalie is the daughter who was never good enough for her mother after said same accident.

Both women return to where there roots were planted. Anna Kate only knows of Winslow through the stories her grandma told. Natalie grew up in the shadow of her older brother and her mother never really sees her.

As each woman grieves, and finds acceptance of the past and prepares for a future we meet a whole wonderful group of characters. And the town match maker has her thoughts into many who be together. We also learn the legend of the pie and a few things about blackbirds

I came across this and it made me think of Sarah Addison Allen so I gave it a try. It did satisfy my current preference for not reading a lot of heavy stuff. And I did like the narration. At some point I started thinking it was going on too long. And that the magical realism was getting a little complicated. I did enjoy the story and characters, these are just the reasons that I didn't give it the 4th star. I will check out the author's other works though.

This was the fun, feel-good book I had been looking for all month, and I'm glad that my friend loved it so well that I decided to give it a go myself. I am a sucker for a story that praises (or even glamorizes) small southern towns: it's true that small-town-south can be problematic, but we don't always need a full dose of reality, especially in a charming story about forgiveness, healing, and pie, all wrapped up with a little magic. It was a fast, happy, read, and if it was a little too neat, or painted a picture a little too technicolor, I can easily forgive it those few flaws of stereotyping. I did find the dual narratives a little distracting - I thought the two main characters voices to be not well-enough distinguished and it was a little jarring here and there jumping between their perspectives. Otherwise, though, this was a happy, fun, summer read.

I loved this book. I loved the family folklore spread throughout it. It was a great story with so many wonderful characters. I enjoyed watching them all personally grow. I did switch from Kindle to the audio version and I'm so glad I did. For me, the audio was the way to go with this story. It's told from two POVs and I loved that each one was different on the audio. I highly recommend this book!

notes for book discussion...

the cat is Bo. Is Gina a bird? did they cause the accident on purpose? to keep the mom there?

It was pretty obvious that they set the fire on purpose. Did all of these tragedies happen to keep the women there? Even Matt's accident?? (Natalie's husband)

were the Linden's birds too no?

Are we supposed to believe that Zee was a bird? and flew to visit since no one seemed to know she made trips to visit her family? Or they thought she was just seeing her daughter.
