Scribd audio. Perfect blend of mystery, family drama, quaint small town living, and mystique/magic.

I did like this. I enjoy a magical realism story. I wish there had been a bit more more depth with the characters and relationships. I liked the characters, mostly. I wanted some things to either move farther along or change in some ways. It is a sweet story though and I will definitely read from this author again.

One of the final recommendations from a friend and co-worker, before the pandemic caused our shifts at the library to go on hold, "Midnight at the Blackbird Café" by Heather Webber offers readers and/or listeners a chance to reflect on the magic of family, and how to discover again after a pivotal moment changes everything.

There is something familiar in Webber's plot, characters, and conclusion. Most have experienced a divide in a family, that with time and effort can be repaired. While the past can hardly be changed for the better, the better can be found in the now and in the future if honesty, patience, forgiveness and compassion are there.

At times I wondered if the trope, "you found your independence and self-worth as a woman, now here is a fulfilling romantic relationship as a reward", would occur for a few of the main characters. There were also times when the dialogue felt theatrical, and rather cheesy in the humor it was trying to convey. Both caused me to have a love/ehhh relationship with the lead characters, but what made up for it were the conversations, dialogue, and outcomes for the families at the center of the tale.

At the end of the day (and the book) the reader, much like the characters of Natalie and Anna Kate, needs to choose what is important and meaningful to and for themselves. It may take some time, cause some pain, but you will grow from it, appreciate it, and enjoy the outcome if it is authentic to you.

If you are curious about Webber's book, give it a try! If it does not strike your fancy, it will at least cause a rumble in your tummy for a delicious slice of pie, and the desire to hug those you treasure most.

I loved it. It had everything I look for in a good book and I never wanted it to end. Probably my favorite book I've read so far this year.

I adored this book. It shows the good and bad of starting over in many different ways, and exactly how people can find themselves when they least expect it.
