This book got me hooked on all the others in the series to come. I read these books like I drank water.

Another book series I never started as a kid and want to mark off my ledger. And unfortunately another book I didn't really need to reread, because my memory was correct. So much of the plot boils down to unnecessary gender essentialism; Pierce's Alanna series handles the (cishet)girl-disguised-as-boy trope with much more nuance and grace. But beyond that, there's significant sexualization of underaged Mary throughout (both as a boy and as a girl) and the egregious sexual harassment and assault is ultimatley the nail in the coffin. On top of it all, the first person POV dialect is intentionally thick and nearly unintelligible (as it's a 'historical' accent rather than simply an English one). Everything about this book screams Not For Kids, save for the actual difficultly level of the writing style. Gonna give the next one a shot but if I have the same complaints, I'm gonna bin this series once and for all.

As the intrepid reader could probably figure out from the cover of this YA novel and its title, Bloody Jack has something to do with pirates. Therefore, one can only deduce that this review is by Morgan (and it is!). However, Bloody Jack by L.A. Mayer does not follow the roving adventures of a pirate crew. The main protagonists are, in fact, pirate-hunting members of the English Navy in the end of the 18th century. More specifically, the main character and her comrades are lowly ships boys on the HMS Dolphin, and although I traditionally spurn the actions of pirate-hunters I do make an exception for this book because it is bloody amazing.

An orphaned girl living on the streets of London in the late 1700s disguises herself as a boy to get a job on a ship, leading to many adventures. The audiobook version of this was really well done. This book has a lot of negativity towards LGBT but I thought it was time period appropriate.

Loved these books when I read them. They are like the YA versions of Pirates of the Caribbean
