One of the best books on writing, period. This is the book that gave me the confidence to write my first novel (thanks, Steve!). Even if you're not a fan of King's fiction, but you think you want to write a novel, you should read this now. Seriously.

I found the book slow, and a little pretentious at times. Stephan King might be a good writer and uses a specific technique, but there are lots of other good writers who do the opposite of him.

What can one say? It has now entered the pantheon of great writing books. It's half memoir, half writing tips. King comes off like an inspiring mentor who's not afraid to give you a well-deserved kick in the keister when you need it. Although I don't always agree with the advice he gives (stories are found objects???) enough of his advice is spot on that I always mention this book to aspiring writers. My own copy is fairly worn - I've probably read it at least three times, and used it as a reference tool countless times. For all aspiring writers - even if you're not a fan of King's writing per say - give it a look. I'm betting you'll come away richer from the experience.

I didn’t know it was a memoir but it was good memoir stuff and good writing advice!
Obviously well written given the author, but it is also extremely heart felt. Hard to not enjoy.
