I loved the unique characters and the retelling parts from the Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Phantom of the Opera. This is my 3rd book by the author.
We are introduced to Claude and Esmerelda who meet at the Faire. Claude is an archdeacon, while Esmerelda is a mage. They come from very different world that are not meant to cross and intermingle, but the sparks fly before words are even uttered to each other.
The story will take you on a journey and rollercoaster of emotions along with the characters. I love the details and depth of the characters and their relationships. I feel like they are character you can relate to in one situation or another. You'll be sucked into this world of mages, Notre dame clergy, action pack scenes, finding love, and self discovery.
The twist and turns in the book were occasionally predictable, but some were surprising. I can't wait for the next book in the series to find out what happens after the cliffhanger.

IM SORRYYYYYY i really really wanted to love this book. I loved the characters, who they were and what they were up to, and i love a good dark sapphic retelling/reimagining. The romance was just very insta-love— they’re obsessed with each other before the book starts with no reason other than months of performances that we entirely missed— it just felt too quick paced and rushed. This is a shorter book, so i can see why that is, but i would have preferred to see more of the tension and less of the spice than vice versa.

Its okay. I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't spun as a notre dame de Paris retelling and stood on its own or inspired by. It would have also been more impactful if she had really committed to the darker and sensual elements it seems like she was trying to play with but didn't want to commit to for idk fear of being too problematic, I guess? Am in love with fem!Claude tho ngl.

Are you looking for a thin plot with dashes of fantasy and romance but mostly an excuse for a few chapters of queer spiciness? Definitely read this book.
Just know that this takes the idea of the Hunchback of Notre Dame and twists it, using a few ideas and elements from the original work, while forsaking every other plot point and theme.
I won’t read the rest of the series and this didn’t really do it for me personally. But I know there are some tortured Catholic gays out there that would eat this up.
