Man, this was such a turnaround from the previous book, which really put me off the rest of the series. Wowee!! I think the one negative comment would be that it doesn't feel like any of the main 5 characters are put in actual peril, as it feels like they're needed for further plot down the line... but perhaps I'll be proven wrong eventually. Damn good stuff though and Hurin is secretly my fave NPC.

I am so pleasantly surprised - the action finally ramped up about halfway through the book. I love the characters and how they are developing, I love the political intrigues and I LOVE the villains. I am beyond excited to start the next book! My only criticisms is that all the women just swoon at Rand but I guess that was the vibe of fantasy at the time? Hopefully it becomes a bit less of a plot point as everything develops.

This was an adventure for sure!

Rand is dumber than a bag of hammers in this one but Rosemund Pike’s audio narration makes it better! And, I loved all her voice acting. Give this woman an academy award for best voice acting in a long-ass audiobook category because she does it all. Gruff sounding men, Irish, Scottish, vixen women, cockney, welsh, and even a southern accent. I thought she sounded kinda like all of the actors who actually play these roles and was amazing. Wheel of time needs no other actor than Pike. Long live Pike, May the light shine on her. I hope Rosemund Pike does the entire series because damn I would read them all. Even if Rand is a dumbass 99% of the time.

My initial thought of this specific book was that Perrin and Mat literally had nothing to do. Mat less so than Perrin and they seemed not important to the storyline at all. I was surprised by the sheer amount of Loriel and this character named Huron who is not even in the WOT TV show but is apparently a huge character in The Great Hunt.

I feel like Robert Jordan’s ideas about women is that they are mostly soft creatures who are only slightly smarter than the very stupid men. The men of the world are all very wary of strong and intelligent women and generally fear, dislike, or distrust them. Aei Sedai are constantly being back talked and undermined by men like Ingtar and Rand who have no idea what they are talking about and should shut the f-up. It’s crazy because these women can call down thunder and lightening and are much older in age and wisdom yet they get no respect. It’s actually annoying how much Rand blames Moriaine for his life problems. Like Frotto would never shit on Gandalf the way Rand shit dumbs on Moriaine. He’s spends a chunk of the book hating Moriaine who is off-page studying in the library doing nothing wrong.

Rand being something of a ladies man is also too dumb to believe. After reading this book I’ve decided that is a step too far in the fantasy. Rand who has no charming qualities and only a great fear and suspicion of women. Rand who wears the same clothes day after day and never bathes and who has a bunch of nasty Heron marks roasted into his skin is not a ladies man.

Nor can I believe that someone queer coded like Min would ever be into him. Elayne seems more naive than Rand but also like a Disney princess with no character development other than to develop a crush on Rand. The Egwane, Min, Elayne love triangle just sucks. Out of left field and really fails to connect because mainly Rand never speaks to any of them so there is no meaningful connection. Lack of character development really makes this whole love triangle flop. It sucks more than the Lan and Nynaeve romance which also sucks.

Favorite character was Lanfear for just the audacity of all her white dresses. The woman travels to an alternative universe and all she packs is a single white dress. That’s wild. Babes wild. I Get it. And, I’m into it.

Second favorite character was Moriaine because even though she was off page she was still there in spirit narrating through the amazing channeling of Rosemund Pike. My favorite Rosemund Pike character voice was her doing the Amerilyn Seat who is her love interest in the show. Rosemund Pike is such a good actress she doesn’t need a love interest she just needs more Pike doing Pike voices.
