This was a surprising book! I haven't read much Stephen King (or any Straub) so maybe this book is predictable if you've read a lot of either author. I thought it was a pretty standard quest/road trip book, but it still somehow surprised me at every turn. I almost never expected what happened next, which was fun for me as a reader! I do think this book was probably longer than it needed to be. I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second, though I did like the ending a lot. My favorite sequences were the Oatley Tap and Sunlight Home. Both gave me chills and were very well written. I think I will read Black House at some point, but I'm not sure when.

I just re-read this for the first time since it was released. I have always thought of this book as one of the best road trip/coming of age novels I have ever read. Thankfully, my re-read proves that to be completely true. So immense. So diverse. So utterly good.

Took a while cuz of other life stuff intruding, but honestly, 900+ pages for what's essentially a somewhat scuzzier YA adventure book is pure King Kokaine overkill!

Fun set pieces tho!
