King is a master storyteller, inclusive of Straub this time around. He appears to have infinite capacity to create new worlds and take his readers to immersive experiences in faraway lands. He develops characters that we grow to care for — Wolf! — and heroes that we support in their quest for justice. Similar to Fairy Tale, we want to see this coming of age story end with a young man’s triumph.
Where I struggle is with the racial epithets. Are they necessary? Is there another way to inform the reader of a character’s evil persona without resorting to language that is better off left in the past?
Out of curiosity, I checked for public threads to see if others feel similarly. Indeed, there are many. And, of course, you have those who parrot conservative “news“ sources and rant about the world being too PC. (My suggestion for those writers is to walk a few miles in the shoes of a person of color and then see how they feel.) Anyway, this is an older book, and it seems that perhaps King has moved away from stereotypical language.
This book was quite enjoyable, and there were many parts that I reread to recapture moment.

This is in my top 5 books of all time. It's fantasy, adventure, and horror all in one go. It's nearly an initiation rite in my family to read this. Because of this book, I've decided to name my firstborn Jack, boy or girl.

I was a little disappointed in this one. It was too reminiscent of other King books and didn't feel very unique. Of course, the characters were very well written, and most of the story was good.

This has been and always will be a heavy favorite of mine. I read it in my teens, heard it in my 20s, and have recently heard it again at 42. It still holds up with the best of SK. I know this doesn't have a huge following, but it truly is amazing fantasy. I recommend to any SK fan or fan of fantasy. A boy is to save his Mama so he traverses two worlds with the help of Wolf. But at every turn, there are both known and unknown enemies. Will he make it to his destination before his mom's life runs out... pure awesomeness. 4.5/5

I struggled hard to get through this. Took me forever. I enjoyed the world that Straub/King created but didn't find everything that happened in it particularly engaging. Really enjoyed the Wolf portion of the book, though.
