I started out annoyed - Sardelle being attacked and hated while Tolemek was just accepted and given a lab pissed me off, and I wanted nothing more than for her to leave and wish them all good luck fighting the magic without her.

But by the end, I was... I don't know if appeased is the right word. But I enjoyed the ride. And I enjoyed Sardelle winning over the squad. I will never get over Tolemek - what Apex said is exactly what I said in my review of book 2, you don't make a weapon like that unless you ARE evil.

I guess I'm invested enough in the overall story to read on, regardless. And I really like Sardelle and Jaxi. And I've forgiven Ridge for his squeamishness about Sardelle's magic, and his assumption that she'd just happily live in his house doing nothing while he continues on with business as usual.

Here's hoping the next book doesn't wreck the fragile peace I've made with the issues in the series!

We meet again a gaggle of beloved characters from the previous two books, [b:Balanced on the Blade's Edge|21797289|Balanced on the Blade's Edge|Lindsay Buroker|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1396094126s/21797289.jpg|41051808] and [b:Deathmaker|22307971|Deathmaker|Lindsay Buroker|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1401001505s/22307971.jpg|41699121], as well as get introduced to three new characters
Spoiler, not all of which make it through to the end
. The book is fastpaced, albeit more action- than character driven this time, and combines elements of fantasy, steampunk, quest, and military scifi with a whiff of romance and Ms. Buroker's trademark brand of humor and technological quirks. It is a fast reading, entertaining book.
However, also the first book in this series that clearly is part of a series, as in a lot of threads are left to continue and quite some events and characterization quirks esp. in the first half of the book have yet to be picked up and put to use. Or at least be explained somehow.
SpoilerI don't want to believe that Col. Thugly is that much of an unbalanced ass without a reason beyond that readers ought to dislike him soundly!

So, if you liked the previous books in this series: Go. Grab it. It'll be a nice way to spend a weekend.
If you don't know the previous books: You'd like to start with them, otherwise you're going to have a lot more question marks in your head than needed to enjoy the story.

Was not crazy about this one. I liked the first two books in the series so much that this was a bit of a let down. All of the characters from the previous books, with new additions, go on a quest together. If you really enjoy stories where a group of characters go on an adventure together, you may like this. I personally like stories that focus on just two characters meeting and developing their relationship.

I have continued on to the rest of the series and plan to read all the books. Unfortunately though, I have yet to like another book in the series as much as the first two.

This series just continues to get better. I was a little sad to go back to just Sardelle and Zirkander's POVs but Tolemek and Ahn's additional views would have been too much, even though I love them as characters. Jaxi was my favorite with her snark in this book. Many more humorous points in this book that made me giggle.
I really enjoyed the magic and steampunk elements colliding in this book.
It didn't end clear cut like the previous two, and it has me ready to move on to book 4.
