Art historians spending their summer in search of lost, medieval masterpieces?
Count me in.

The idea of history professors in a relationship and choosing to explore Europe for the summer definitely appeals to my romantic, history-loving heart.

References and allusions to historical figures and places inspired me.
*currently planning a trip to Rothenburg, Germany*

After finishing:

Hhhhhmmmmmm

Hhmmm...

The setup was excellent, but the execution, characters, and plot were too cozy in place of dynamic. The author was trying to write a *don’t need no man* main female character and she succeeded there but there was literally no depth to any of the characters or the plot. Very surface-level writing and mystery setup. I did love the historical significance however!

I enjoy Elizabeth Peter mysteries, especially her Amelia Peabody series. This first volume in the Vicky Bliss series was fairly good. I enjoyed the quick-witted and sassy heroine, along with the fast-paced writing. I bought all four of the other books in this series once I heard that Peters is coming out with the sixth and final Vicky Bliss book this month. I'm looking forward to the journey!

A fun mystery that combines Agatha Christie-style sleuthing and Scooby-Doo-esque castle hijinks with German art history.

>>> "Since there was nothing else to do, we went sightseeing. By Tony's definition, this activity includes frequent stop for liquid refreshment. The drinking places of Rothenburg are all charming; you can guzzle beer or drink tea in dark, raftered rooms or sit in a cobblestoned square admiring the view. We tried both, and since we couldn't decide which ambience was preferable, we tried both several times."

>>> "A scholar is supposed to keep an open mind. All our instincts are against a supernormal explanation, but instincts aren't logic. How do we know?
"Well, for one thing, this business is too corny to be supernatural...By some straining of the brain I could believe in ghosts; but I can't believe in a ghost that acts like Terror Comics."

>>> "It is setting a high value upon our opinions to roast men alive on account of them." Nobody ever said a truer word. But Montaigne came along too late for Konstanze, and the Essays were only the opening wedge of rationalism. If you think people are ever rational."

I liked Vickie Bliss enough. I didn't take to her as quickly as I did Amelia Peabody however. It took me a little time to get used to the mannerisms of this character.
I liked the double mystery of solving what happened in the past in order to figure out the mystery in the present. But I also thought it was difficult to follow at times with all the names thrown about.

In listening to the audio book, I thought the narrator was awesome. That was the true standout of this book for me. All the different dialects and male / female narration was done extremely well.

I'll more than likely pick up the next book in the series. From what I gather it does get better as it goes along.
