If you’ve read I’ll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara and you’re craving more, look no further..This is an Audible only book, you can’t even get you’re hands on an ebook or hardcover...you have to actually listen. This book is comprised of recordings from the investigators, witnesses, and victims/survivors. It’s chilling. You won’t find any fiction out there that’s more terrifying than reading this book. Especially when you’re listening alone at night, OUTSIDE with one candle on the deck. (I don’t recommend doing that btw) The author, Paul Holes spent 20+ years tracking down this killer and it was a roller-coaster of an investigation. To be there at the end when he catches the bastard feels soooo good. I loved everything about this book. It’s smart, scary, interesting, funny and devastating throughout. It’s not long either so there’s no excuse

Such a good production. I already knew a lot about the case itself previous to listening to this, so I really appreciated hearing more about how they actually went about catching that douchebag. Paul Holes's dedication to the case is absolutely amazing.

Good as a podcast, not so good as an "audiobook"

For fans of true crime - if you read and enjoyed I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara, I *highly* recommend this title. It's an excellent companion piece and sort of a sequel to McNamara's work, told primarily from a law enforcement perspective. I found it pretty riveting, especially towards the end when they went into detail as to *how* they found him. McNamara gets a special mention by Holes as the person who kind of reignited the fire under him to continue working the case. At the point when they met, he'd spent a combined 3 yrs chasing down 2 different suspects who didn't pan out & he was almost ready to give up. There are trigger warnings aplenty because the crimes are discussed, and there are interviews with survivors & victim family members. (Those ladies are there at the end to talk about life after his capture too and I started crying at work.)

4.5

Evil Has A Name is a very immersive podcast that apparently I get to log as a book. No complaints here, but there's no denying that this is not really a book. Keep that in mind if you don't usually enjoy podcasts.

It's fascinating to hear the stories in the investigators' and victims' own voices, and the level of emotion you feel through their words is more than you'll ever get from reading them on a page. Some reviewers mention that there isn't really any new information that you can't find by scouring the internet forums and news articles. I mostly agree with that, but the collection of all these stories and perspectives into one cohesive listen is perfect. The pacing and flow of events is well done and makes you want to keep listening. I think the most interesting part for me was the amount of time and effort that went into creating the family trees to search for the GSK. I don't feel any article I read up until now truly conveyed the gravity of the work that was done and how incredible it is. I honestly wish they went into more detail about it.

The only major complaint I have is about the audio, and since it only exists in audio form I feel it's necessary to address it in my review. The audio levels vary from interview to interview, with some being much poorer quality than others. The background noise is sometimes purposeful and atmospheric (the sounds of driving on Russell Blvd in Davis, CA), while other times it clouded the speaker's voice (echoing rooms/bad recordings).

Holy smokes. This book is excellent. Definitely emotional, so much sadness for the victims and anger toward Joseph Deangelo. Amazing police work to apprehend after so many years.

Listened to this Audible original, which made it very much like a podcast. Enjoyed hearing more details about the long-awaited capture of the Golden State Killer, as well as hearing the story in Paul Holes' own voice. A must for fellow true crime fanatics.

If you have ANY interest in true crime, ANY interest in the Golden State Killer, this is a must read. SO GOOD.

After just having read 'I'll Be Gone in the Dark' which tells the same story as this audible show, I found it perfect to lead straight into this. The book 'I'll Be Gone...' is written by a woman who investigated the crimes of this rapist and killer from the comfort of her home, this series is the in-depth analysis from the detectives who worked the case both when it first came to light and later as a cold case.

We have a whole load of people involved in the operation to find out who this killer is and to solve this. This guy was infamously awful and terrified the people of the Golden State area for many years in the night. This audio show tells the story from the eyes of those hunting him, and it's great because unlike 'I'll Be Gone...' where the author died before they caught this guy, this story goes right through to the end where the man behind it all is finally captured thanks to advancements in technology.

I really recommend this series if you have any interest in true crime or if you've read 'I'll Be Gone in the Dark' as that book was a natural lead-in to this. 4*s
