Less interesting YA fantasy to me than the first book (Graceling) due to the main character being a... sexy monster(?) and having to deal with frequent sexual assault threats. Archer is also a strange character - the age gap seemed uncomfortably large between him and the maid later in the book (I think he's 22? If not, I might be off here). The politics of the Dells are interesting, and I liked the palace intrigue, but it was a little thin overall with little time to know or understand the opposition parties.
The inclusion of a character from the first book felt pretty pointless overall, and I'm not sure why it was there other than to connect them directly.
Still, despite my negativity, there were good action scenes, likeable characters, and overall solid writing for a YA novel. Weird that these came way before Maas' series and yet hit many of the themes better.

A good follow on to 'Graceling'. I think I would've liked this more if I had a chance to read it in less sittings.

At times, it reminded me of "The Giver" series. Not because of the themes, but the inter-twined characters from the previous book and how it is set before Graceling. I'm looking forward to seeing how the series ends.

I liked it, but not as much as Graceling. Still very excited for Bitterblue.

I couldn't quite get as into the characters in Fire as I did in Graceling. The world was more complex, the pacing decent (if a bit slow), but the characters, although well developed, did not inspire the same level of empathy and love. That said, I could not put this down. It had all the finer points of writing as Graceling did, and a great female heroin. I'm off to re-read Graceling now!

Didnt like the concept of monsters and also felt some parts were really boring
