75% of the book was okay. 25% was phenomenal!
Although I found myself immediately hooked by the protagonist’s pretentious and sardonic Holden Caulfield-esque narration style, it still didn’t pack enough emotional punch for me to care about the characters or relationships in this novel. I had a blast making fun of him with the author, but eventually I found the Groundhog Day repetition a little tiring, and in classic JLit fashion, what it excelled at in slice of life charm it lacked in true heart and depth.
However, the small details and Easter eggs of the multiverse and the complex web of interconnectedness that it weaved together by part 4 was truly impressive. A great concept and satisfying execution, a worthwhile read for anyone feeling stuck in the life they stumbled into.

Whether I would recommend this book or not is very hard to say. It’s broken up into 4 main sections, the first two are mildly interesting, I strongly disliked the third, but the fourth was absolutely incredible. Or was so good that I want to say it makes the book worth it. The rating I gave is reflective of the way my star rating on this book changed wildly throughout and now we have ended with a nice 3.25. It will definitely hit extra hard if you’re in college or at another place where you are making big decisions about your life.

In an exploration of four alternate universes, we come to see that no matter what choices the protagonist made, he was always going to end up the same way — personality wise, who he crossed paths with, and how his story went. It shows how no matter how different you think you can be, our paths are hardcoded in us.
The premise is interesting, and I think it could’ve been great. But I didn’t realize quite how repetitive it would be. I knew the personality and end results of each universe were going to be the same, but I thought there would be more discernible differences. Reusing the exact same sentences made reading a bit mundane. And by the third story, I was tired of the story. The fourth story being more of a deviation and explanation made me more invested, but this was still dulled by repetitive writing and honestly a very dislikable cast of characters.
Hard to root for multiple sleazy seeming people. No redeeming qualities, which is fine and the point, but it certainly made for a tough read.
