This book was pretty meh. Very slow at times and dragged a lot. Also, the translation felt really clunky and awkward at times — there were a lot of easily translatable Japanese words that were randomly left untranslated in the narrative (for example, shimbun for news, or jankenpon for rock paper scissors) for no apparent reason, and I found it broke my immersion a lot. I was always very conscious of the fact that I was reading a translated book, whereas with, say, My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante, I never had that feeling.

Tl;dr: if you’re thinking of reading this, just watch the anime instead.

I picked this one up on a whim when I was at a local bookstore for a reading a while back. The narrator's voice is very well realized, though he is pretty obnoxious. Still, it's an interesting and often very funny story.

I wasn't sure how to rate this, I didn't love it but didn't dislike it. It had some good portions but also had some portions which had my interest dropping off. I think the story/writing definitely lends itself better to a visual format rather than text with the groundhog day aspects so the anime may work better for the story.

I also think I got the message of the story after the second restart so the others after that were more just to see the possibilities which I knew would end the same each time. So, it doesn't engage you as much if you already know what's about to happen and the endpoint of every story, but it was interesting to see the tweaks each time and the last portion was interesting.

I also just think I generally just prefer stories with a stronger plot and some stakes.

Will give the anime a watch as I think I'll enjoy it more in the visual format.

Upgraded this review as I actually think back on this book a lot for some reason and that tends to mean it's made some sort of impact on me.

DID NOT FINISH: 18%

I was just kind of bored. I didn't care what happened to the protagonist and the humor didn't work for me.

I know the narrator is supposed to be unlikeable, but I didn't like the way he pushed off responsibility for his failures onto his equally despicable friend and the idea that of one of them was going to be "rewarded" with a girlfriend just pissed me off.
