okkkk so the entirety of the start pissed me off
like who in their right mind feeds another clan knowing the fucking deputy is evil and hella pissed at them? OR SNEAKS OFF TO SEE THE CAT HE TRIED TO HAVE KILLED AND EAT FUCKING MICE WITH HIM??! and all this for fucking silverstream who then went and died (boo hoo, nobody cares!!! her only attribute was being “super duper fine”, like please get a life graystripe)
and then fireheart just runs off, finds out about bluestars kits (yet somehow takes 70% of the book figuring that one out???) AND SOMEHOW THAT’S LIKE THE ONE REASON SHE BEGINS TO TRUST HIM???
also can we talk about how ICONIC yellowfang is and how she just casually feeds her own son deathberries? his last interaction with someone else before dying is literally “oh yeah you’re my son, guess you did have kin after all hahaha! but i fucking hate you so i never told you, anyways die in hell loser get poisoned!!!” HELLO???? WHAT IN THE DIVA???
her and cinderpaw are perfect for each other because the way she casually tells tigerclaw to fuck off and lick the god damn kit it’s not that deep whilst silverstream is over here dying is SO iconic
also it’s really sad but sweet seeing all the cats from later books popping up :( like omg there’s brightpaw, actually happy and healthy! welp that’ll be changing soon! oh and there’s thornpaw, i love him! oh and there’s mistyfoot, who manages to outlive fucking everyone and STILL be leader in like the most recent series (how?? HOW???)
i think i need a break though because i’m missing my love fantasy and i have some great books that are calling my name but i also really wanna finish this

The first half and the Graystripe arc are veeeery frustrating to read as an adult (I wish that the clans would actually communicate about their issues rather than make assumptions all of the time. ) Also, Fireheart's criticism of Cloudpaw and his inability to respect authority AS he's covering up for Graystripe and going out on secret missions all of the time feels very hypocritical.
It was, though, a relief to come to the end of
Spoiler Tigerclaw's betrayal. It was set up well and it fit with the general momentum of Fireheart's growth. The strange thing is how Bluestar obviously trusts Fireheart on a more personal level than Tigerclaw (with the information about her kits and some of her decisions) but she's unwilling to believe him when he discovers that Tigerclaw lied about Oakheart's death... again, something that should have EASILY been discussed at a gathering back when it happened. My favorite moment was actually the end of Yellowfang's arc with Brokenstar. I completely forgot that she downright murders him after he betrays Thunderclan again. Cinderpaw also has some great moments.

All in all, a good re-read, but some large plot holes and character inconsistencies in order to make sure that the conflict isn't resolved until the third act.

like so good. graystripe tea was so hot, i love their friendship. but i was just annoyed how they kept on lowkey giving refreshers on stuff that happened like bro i read the last two books you don't need to tell me again about all this lore.

I am very pleasantly surprised and impressed with this book. Its really easy to follow with a solid and intriguing story of conspiracy. The characters are interesting with distinct and well rounded personalities. Also, the cat society has very easy are well developed social structures - which are not explained but they are easily discovered as you progress through the story.
Really impressed and would definitely recommend!

this ate down, I’m so glad that Cinderpaw found her place because it was seriously sad to see her so depressed. Okay also Yellowfang was such an icon in this book, killing her son with death berries??? honestly? power move. I loved how she showed her soft side for Cinderpaw
dark sad
