Nostalgic Read:
Forest of Secrets was the first plotline that I managed to remember over the fifteen years since first reading. In fact, this is the book I remember as a staple of what the Warriors series was about. Secrets, forbidden romances, and internal struggles between the warrior code and justice. The writing still doesn't hold up well to time (don't worry, we're getting there) but now there are themes and foreshadowing to supplement the main plot. The primary complaint of this book would be the speed in which the romance progresses. I had this problem in the previous book as well, but I prefer crushes and relationships that bloom over time.

These are really enjoyable and contain adult topics in way that children can experience and understand. They seem to be taking an almost Harry Potter approach to the series as it seems to steadily becoming darker as the books continue
Man, I felt so proud of Fireheart in this book. He's getting more and more confident in himself and in the decisions he makes. This book had the surprising twist of the two kits that Bluestar gave up to become the leader of Thunderclan. And that they're in an entirely different clan? Yep.
This history was mimicked in Graystripe's story with Silverstream. Fireheart was in a difficult situation knowing about the kits between the two of them. And I felt so bad for Graystripe when he lost Silverstream.
Cloudkit is finally starting to listen and behave which is good cause his stubbornness was beginning o irk me.
Cinderclaw is going to be an awesome medicine cat. I'm glad she found her place in the clan despite being injured so that she couldn't be a warrior.
Now, Tigerclaw. In his quest for more power he has hurt / killed too many cats. His attack one Bluestar was good in a sense because it made his motives clear to her so that she knew Fireheart was right. And now Fireheart is deputy! Yay! I have a feeling we haven't heard the end of Tigerclaw though.
I just wanted to hug Fireheart when Graystripe decided to leave and go with his kits to Riverclan. He lost his best friend and closest ally. Not cool, book series, not cool.
This was another good book.

Rating reflects my daughter's love for the series. This book fits the mold, with enough genealogies, history, intrigue, and secrets (some sensible, others not) to rival some adult fantasies.
We did this book as a read-aloud, and I found the prose grating, repetitive, and difficult to get my mouth around. Inadvertent tongue-twisters, awkward constructions, that sort of thing.
Ableism Alert: The main character's apprentice was injured in a previous book, so she's disabled here (she limps). Every time the main character sees her, he feels guilty that she got hurt on his watch and that she'll never be a warrior now. Never mind that she's adapted and is happy and confident in her new role as medicine apprentice. At first it was understandable, then kind of offensive, and finally ridiculous. My daughter and I would roll our eyes whenever the two were "on stage" at the same time, because we knew the mea culpas were coming.
Cod help me, my daughter picked up the next book in the series & now I'm reading her that one, too. Remember me as I was.

This is the best one so far. I didn’t realize this would break me the way it did.
